CONCORDIA MEMORIAL LIGHTHOUSE

We sought to create a response that worked in tandem with the site and the Costa Concordia disaster. The original function of a lighthouse is based on practicality and safety, giving off the impression of stability within an otherwise unstable environment. Modern technology has rendered that obsolete.

There are 16 structures which each contain a pair of two towers to represent the 32 lives lost. The lighthouses and visitor center are to be constructed from the salvaged steel of the wrecked ship. We reduced the mass of the structures to give them a skeletal appearance which references the frame of a ship. At night, the sky and the steel structures are illuminated as a guide for passing vessels.

The lighthouse physically and metaphysically bridges the boundaries of earth, water, sky.
